Chaos erupted at Thungithu Boys’ Secondary School in Nanyuki town on Saturday when irate teachers ejected Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (Kuppet) National Treasurer, Njenga Mwethi, from their meeting.

Mwethi, who had attended the Branch General Assembly (BGA) was booed and heckled before being forcibly kicked out of the meeting when he started campaigning for leaders in the national offices.

Mwethi was accompanied by Lynnet Khamadi, the Mombasa Kuppet branch secretary and her colleague Jane Ngigi, Mombasa branch treasurer.

Trouble for Mwethi began when he accused the current branch leadership of mismanaging the burial benevolent fund.

“We have received numerous complaints about the mismanagement of the fund in the national treasury office and as such we are going to commence an audit,” Mwethi said.

Mwethi then started campaigning for the leadership of Akello Misori and Omboko Milemba who are expected to defend their seats during the forthcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Vihiga next month.

The Kuppet national treasurer attempted to enumerate some of the achievements made by the national office, but he instead attracted the wrath of the teachers who accused them of betraying them by unilaterally calling off a nationwide strike.

The teachers claimed that the Kuppet national office betrayed them when they called off a nationwide strike without achieving the very purpose it had been called for.

They also accused the national leadership of failing to address the issues of teachers’ medical insurance cover under the management of Minet Insurance Company.

Things turned ugly as teachers threw water bottles, books and other items at the dais where Mwethi was seated.

Attempts Laikipia branch executive secretary Robert Miano and others to calm the situation failed as the teachers shouted for the official’s departure.

“He should have told us about the next CBA, anticipated promotions and why the nationwide teachers’ strike was called off prematurely,” shouted one of the teachers.

Others in attendance included Edward Obwocha (Kuppet national secretary for secondary schools) and Samburu branch executive secretary William Longoyiap.
