Bolt Kenya Fined Over Data Protection Breach.

One Kennedy Mbugua, a taxi driver has won his case against Bolt Operations and Bolt Support Kenya Ltd. In compensation, Mbugua is set to receive Sh500,000 following unauthorized parties who had access to his account and performed seventeen fraudulent trips worth over Sh26,000. Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassait made the order.

“Bolt Operations OU and Bolt Support Kenya Limited is hereby found liable for violating Mbugua’s right to access his personal data under Section 26 (b) of the Act, correction of false or misleading data under Section 26(d) of the Act and the failure to fulfill its obligations under the Act,” ruled the Data commissioner.

In his submission, Mbugua told the Data Commissioner that the company unlawfully accessed and processed his personal information, resulting in the unlawful disclosure of his personal data to third parties who used his Bolt driver account information for fraudulent purposes.

On 15th May 2023, he was contacted by a lady regarding his Bolt account that it was being used by a different driver raising concerns of unauthorized access and usage.

In response to her request, Mbugua then sent selfies holding a newspaper along with his identification card in an attempt to regain control of his account.

On 16th May 2023, despite several attempts, he encountered difficulties logging into his Bolt account as his email and password had been breached and despite reporting the matter to Bolt office and police office, his actions were futile as they gave deaf ear.
